Leticia was waiting in meeting room B. The heavy cast had been shed for a new, more flexible brace. Because of the knee brace, she was wearing floral knee-high culottes. He could see where a more restrictive support had been. The loose-hanging blouse had sleeves large enough for a new, less restrictive arm cast that hung in a sling. Although out of proportion, the blouse fashionably complemented the culottes.

Ray sat and started with, “Let me get the how-are-you question out of the way.”

“Ray, Ray, Ray. You have no idea how good it is to hear your unfiltered honesty. In one sentence, you are the only guy I know who can care and not care at the same time.”

With an acknowledging smile, Ray responded, “So, how are you?”

“I am alive.” That answer put everything in perspective. Leticia gave Ray a quick tour of her injuries and treatments. If she could jump a few more hurdles, home-based physical Therapy could happen as soon as next week. There was still no breakthrough in trying to figure out why anyone would want her dead.
